Even though Covid-19 restrictions are easing, we are still doing all the precautions that we did before (see prior newsletters). Right now, we still require mask-wearing in the office, whether you are vaccinated or not. We will lift that restriction once we hit 75% vaccination rate in our area*.
We are all so excited about so many people getting vaccinated!!! We are on our way to herd immunity. BTW, if you do not want to get vaccinated for ANY reason, consider taking “one for the team”. Why? To protect the vulnerable among us, to get us to herd immunity quicker, to slow down the mutation of the virus, to break the transmission cycle, to return to the “old” normal sooner, and of course, to protect you and yours. Make the decision that best aligns with your core values.
That said, the coronavirus is here to stay. It will continue to mutate – just like the flu virus – to stay alive (that could be a hit song), and this virus does it better than others (viral plasticity)**. Every day we are learning more about how this virus works and the medical problems it causes.
Zoonosis refers to infections that can be transmitted (jump) from animals to humans (ie. the coronavirus). Bubonic plague in the 14th century was caused by a bacteria that killed 25 – 60% of the world’s population. This was transmitted via flea bites by infected fleas. This was considered the worst pandemic in world history.
It has been estimated that the flu virus jumped to humans 1000 years ago***, possibly from either birds or bats. The flu pandemic of 1918 was actually no more aggressive than our current flu virus but due to sick military personal going home, overcrowding, a wet winter, general undernourishment, etc., it killed between 20 – 90 million people worldwide.
The common cold virus jumped from birds about 200 years ago (it’s nice that it usually doesn’t kill us, just makes us miserable). **** And there is anthroponosis, where viruses jump from us to an animal, mutate, then jump back to us (reverse anthroponosis).***** Crazy!! Keep washing or sanitizing your hands and stop touching your face.
My newest book recommendation is Burnout, The Secret to Unlocking the Stress Cycle by Emily and Amelia Nagoski. It is written for women but men would benefit from reading it also. My 25-year-old daughter recommended it to me and I found it to be insightful and extremely helpful. You may too. (And yes, I bought a copy for all my staff). Not a light beach read. No sex. No romance. No heart-stopping thrills. And yet, still very readable. Enjoy your summer!!!
***I read this somewhere and can’t find the link. Probably from the book Spillover
